Loyton Monthly Field & Game Management Update From Stewart McIntyre & the Loyton team

Cover Crop Planning & Establishment

Planning for our cover crops began in February and March, with detailed mapping, measuring, soil health testing, and selection of tailored seed mixes. This groundwork ensures our crops get off to the strongest possible start, supporting both environmental and sporting outcomes.

As of Mid June, all our cover crops have now been drilled and are establishing well across the estates. While pest pressure remains a concern, our monitoring systems are helping us maintain plant health and quality. These crops play a vital role in our game shooting programme.

In summer, they offer pollen-rich flowering species that attract insects — a key protein source for growing poults. Through winter, these same plots help hold and feed game, and are essential for effective game drives. Importantly, they also bridge the ‘hungry gap’ in January through March, when natural food is scarce.

The small seeds they produce are a valuable food source for many farmland bird species needing to build condition ahead of the breeding season.

Pen Preparation & Poult Arrival

While crop work is ongoing, our team of keepers has been busy preparing pens for the imminent arrival of this season’s poults. This includes repairing winter damage, constructing new pens in improved locations, and installing reliable water and feeding systems — all to ensure the best start for our birds here at Loyton.

Each pen is designed to meet high welfare standards, offering a mix of sunlight, shelter, feed rides, and plenty of roosting space. Electric fencing is installed around all pen boundaries to protect against predators, particularly foxes.

The result is a strong, healthy poult ready for eventual release and integration into drives for the season ahead.
