Angus Barnes: Transforming Loyton Sporting into a Premier Rural Hospitality and Shooting Enterprise
Nestled in the heart of the West Country, Loyton Sporting stands as a shining example of how tradition and innovation can coexist to create something extraordinary. At the helm is Angus Barnes, a visionary entrepreneur and custodian of Loyton, whose passion for rural stewardship and sustainable hospitality has redefined the UK shooting industry. Through tireless dedication and strategic vision, Barnes has transformed his family’s modest shoot into a thriving business that sets the benchmark for luxury and quality.
Angus’ journey to leading Loyton Sporting began with a solid foundation in education. Having attended Woolborough Hill and Bradfield College, he later pursued studies at The New Academy for Art Studies. This blend of academic and creative grounding equipped him with the skills needed to take on ambitious challenges. His early career as an auctioneer at Bonhams in London provided the perfect proving ground. Over twelve years, Angus honed his leadership and strategic thinking skills, culminating in his role as Director and Head of the Antique Arms & Sporting Gun Department. Under his leadership, the department’s annual turnover grew tenfold, from £300,000 to an impressive £3 million.
In 2003, Barnes returned to his roots in the West Country, bringing with him a wealth of expertise and a vision for the future. What began as a small, 15-day family shoot quickly evolved into Loyton Sporting, a management enterprise that now oversees over 400 shoot days annually. The transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Today, Loyton Sporting manages eight premier sporting estates, five of which consistently rank among the top twenty shoots in the UK. Demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, Barnes built three of these estates from scratch, establishing Loyton Sporting as a trailblazer in the field.
Central to Loyton Sporting’s success is its dedication to exceptional hospitality. Barnes and his family established Loyton Lodge, a luxurious ten-bedroom shooting lodge that has become synonymous with unparalleled service and comfort. Under Barnes’ leadership, the lodge has set new standards in the industry, blending rustic charm with modern luxury to create an unforgettable experience for guests. The expansion didn’t stop there. Recognising the growing demand for world-class accommodations, Barnes added Morebath Manor and Molland House to the Loyton portfolio. These properties, capable of hosting up to 80 guests nightly, further solidified Loyton Sporting’s reputation as a leader in the sector.
While Loyton Sporting has become a benchmark for quality, its success is rooted in Barnes’ unwavering commitment to the people and land that make it all possible. Employing 32 full-time gamekeepers and numerous seasonal staff, the business plays a vital role in the local community. Beyond employment, Barnes has championed sustainable practices through initiatives like Wild Farm (Loyton), which integrates rural hospitality with eco-friendly principles.
Barnes’ vision extends beyond Loyton’s immediate operations. He has founded and led several key ventures, including Loyton Holdings, Loyton LLP, and Loyton Retail LLP, each catering to various aspects of shooting, hospitality, and estate management. These businesses are united by a common goal: to preserve the traditions of countryside living while adapting to the modern demands of sustainability and excellence.
For Barnes, success is not just measured by business achievements but also by the experiences created for clients. Loyton Sporting offers more than just shooting—it provides a window into a way of life that celebrates the beauty of the countryside. From the meticulously maintained estates to the carefully curated hospitality, every detail reflects Angus’ passion for quality and authenticity.
Angus Barnes’ story is one of transformation, leadership, and an unrelenting drive to set new standards. Through his innovative approach, he has not only built a thriving enterprise but also established Loyton Sporting as a pioneer in rural hospitality and shooting. As the business continues to grow, with plans for further expansion and sustainability initiatives, Barnes remains steadfast in his mission: to honor the traditions of the past while creating a legacy that inspires the future.
