Combe Sydenham was once the home of Sir Francis Drake who, whilst famed for his explorative navigation and sea captaincy was also a skilled water engineer. At the center of Combe Sydenham a series of leats and ponds are testament to his designs for water supply.  This firmly established shoot was the first estate Angus added to the Loyton portfolio.  A long-standing alliance with the Barnes family has led to a traditional, old-fashioned, family atmosphere whilst delivering highest-quality shooting. Whether a 100 or 500 bird day, the atmosphere will always be with the same – professional, friendly and great fun.

18 drives provide consistent, technically difficult pheasants from testing terrain off both woodland and game crop in a stunning, historic setting. Expect to see a steady stream of high birds. You may see some partridges and wild duck – evidence of the craft of these keepers in constantly striving for variety and an interesting and challenging shooting experience. Each drive is different, which is all part of what makes Combe Sydenham popular.  The West Country can sometimes leave Guns permanently in steep wooded valleys.  Part of the beauty of Combe is the combination of open terrain with the gun line standing in fields complimenting the woodland and giving an enjoyable combination of scenery.  Signature drives – Folly, Eisengard, Bird’s Hill and the Chair – although we would argue that there are more!

The atmosphere at Combe Sydenham is terrific with a genuine buzz – everyone enjoys what they do here and it is proof to see plenty of family and youngsters on the beating team in the holidays and at weekends.

NOURISHMENT

Lunch is served in the Shoot Lodge at Combe – a warm, welcoming and stylish family-designed room with a log fire and interesting archive photography. The food and wine served is of the highest quality – a modern twist on the traditional shooting lunch. Each estate has its own food ‘style’ for variety and to maintain the long held view that lunch should be a highlight of the day! Combe Sydenham offers a combination of Classical French and Modern British style dishes, bringing just a little refinement and interest to the lunch table; truffled pheasant, confit duck legs, well seasoned, vibrant vegetables and delectable cakes.
